Must-Visit Place in Doha, Qatar - SOUQ WAQIF

Souq by its name itself means market in Arabic. Therefore, in this place, you could expect to find many traditional items, souvenirs, carpets, local pets, food, restaurant with the outdoor theme. This place is very big and for me, to be honest, I always get lost when I visit this place. Nevertheless, it has been modified to charter tourists' need and also still able to maintain its authencity at the same time provide the ambience of a traditional Arabic market. This place is best to be visited at night time especially during summer. This place is also pretty good to meet people from all around the world as most of the expats love to come here to relax and chilling. There are also many hotels inside souq and around this area, so for tourist, it is good and recommended to stay around souq if you might be interested in experiencing the local culture. Here are some pics taken during the night time.

There are hundreds of restaurants all around this area. You could easily find your choice of cuisine for your meal preferences here from the local Arabic cuisine, Turkish, Lebanese until Thai and Italian cuisine here. I went to a Lebanese restaurant called Assi when I was here. The food was pretty good to satisfy my taste bud since it was the first time I tried Lebanese cuisine. For me, the food has a lot of similarity among Turkish and Arabic. A slight differences are there in terms of the seasoning used but still, it is almost similar. Anyway, I enjoyed the food there and the prices range is average around 50 riyal per meal which is around $13 dollars. Most of the restaurants at the souq have almost similar price range except for the fine dining or buffet which could go above 100 riyal. Many of the visitors like to enjoy their meal accompanied by Sisha, a type of Middle-East Cigarette with various of flavours such as Melon, Apple, Grape, etc.

Here are some of the meals my friend and I had.

Potato Soup +/-15 Qatari Riyal

Chicken Appetiser

Kebab Platter +/- 70 Qatari Riyal
My friend had a flowery ice cream in this market. It was in a shop and we were expecting it to be a great taste of Italian type-like ice cream. However, it turned out the rosy ice cream is not bloomed and it was so small for such a pricey ice cream. Taste was so-so, totally not worth it.

There are so many traditional cookies and cakes all around the market. I tried some but couldn't remember the name of the cakes. However, most of the cake are sweet. Some might be too sweet, but still I love it!

Here is a beverage HIGHLY recommended. The place is called Tea Time. It might be a place for tea, but most of the people knew this place for the juice. The price range is around 8-20 riyal depending on the choice and size of the juice. There are choices of mixed fruit within the juice. I really like it as it tastes so good and originally fresh. We need to queue to get this juice for around 15 minutes since it was after meal time and it is summertime.
Mango and Strawberry Mixed Juice - 12 Riyal

For those who are interested in local arts, there are Souq Waqif Art Center where lots of art masterpieces are displayed here.

We ran into some other friends while our visit at Souq. It is no doubt a choice for many during weekend.
